What a CMMS (and a GMAO) is in medical equipment management
A CMMS is the software that centralizes the inventory, maintenance and traceability of a healthcare institution's medical equipment in one place. The acronym stands for Computerized Maintenance Management System. In a hospital, a CMMS replaces loose spreadsheets and paper records with a single database where each device has its profile, its history and its scheduled maintenance.
What a CMMS is
A CMMS records three things and keeps them linked: what equipment exists (the inventory), what is done to it (preventive and corrective maintenance, work orders) and what happened to each one (traceability: calibrations, repairs, transfers, retirements).
The value is not in each piece of data on its own (those already exist in some notebook or spreadsheet) but in having them connected. When the serial number, the date of the last calibration and the open work order live in the same profile, the question "is this ventilator operational?" is answered in seconds, not by checking four different sources.

CMMS and GMAO: one tool, two names
GMAO (Gestión del Mantenimiento Asistido por Ordenador) is the term used in Spanish, above all in tender documents and technical documentation of European origin. CMMS is the English term. They name the same category of software.
A tender asking for "a GMAO system for medical technology" and a search for "hospital CMMS" point to the same thing. The difference is vocabulary, not function.

A CMMS manages the equipment, not the patient. It coexists with the hospital's clinical management system; it does not replace it.
Medical-equipment CMMS vs. industrial CMMS
There are generic CMMS tools built for industrial maintenance: factory machines, fleets, buildings. They work for managing assets, but they don't know the vocabulary or the demands of medical equipment.
A medical-equipment CMMS incorporates what the healthcare asset needs: clinical nomenclature catalog (UMDNS/ECRI), calibration fields, the device's criticality for care, and the record a licensing audit expects to see. KIBBO works with that vocabulary natively; an adapted industrial CMMS does not.
